. >> from vf corp. in from ralph lauren. we have seen increase and williams sonoma hit an increase. last but not least. we have had dynamite retail sales from the iphone 5. could that be why stocks are headed in the right direction? we know that a lot of money comes from the consumer's balance sheet. it is part of the qe 3 thing? the boom went to mortgages and refinances. jp morgan, wells fargo and citigroup. i will be addressing the change in regime later in the show. i can tell you that no one was expecting this. when we see that employment is weak we can't fathom strong department store sales. we are stuck with the positives. why lot of people strangely don't like it. we are on pace to sell 1.8 million autos. we were doing 9 million the year before that. the boom time level figures and the boom doesn't fit with the boom. and gm is doing poorly elsewhere. but in this country. the numbers say go with the boom. call me a numbers guy. how about the manufacturing figures? we know europe is weak. what matters to the market is the trajectory. we were headed down and now we are headed up

what is vf corp.? >> apparel brands and wrangler jeans, backpacks and timberland boots and consumables. in a world where we are worried about the economy and what is going to happen we like consumables and that is as consumable as it gets. three kids at home go through that fast. ashley: very popular products. we had a mild winter in the northeast and across the country so it is looking good. >>, are good and nasty weather early on you could see some big numbers out of this company. ashley: your number one pick yum brands. >> yum brands is pizza hut and taco bell and kfc around world not just in the u.s.. kfc business in china is robust. growing high single digits and 10% plus. the chinese market loves chicken. ashley: not so much hamburgers. chicken is number one. >> dominant fast-food chain in china and will continue to be so. ashley: yum continues to grow when you are not worried about the consumer? >> you have to eat every day. ashley: that is true. very good. one last thing. a lot of people in saf

every time vf corp. went higher, you've got to sell the stock. why? because part of it is in north face and you buy north face when it's cold, so we should expect a shortfall. it happens. companies can do well. there is natural demand and improving demand. people thought pvh was borrowing from spring sales in january, then business improved in february. got better still in march. that's pretty much what i'm hearing about retail in general. the word on the street was that january sales were stronger because of the weather. look out, february, your sales have been stolen. then numbers were fantastic. fine weather larceny. and easter calendar, lent. this mind set isn't restricted to retail. in the last 24 hours, we got great numbers from alcoa. rarely have i seen so much chatter about earnings. i read a bunch of reports saying it was a one-time only inventory build. that businesses just needed to refill their glasses. in reality, quarters turned from a dramatic decline in raw costs, natural gas and fixed input in glass and a rise in actual glass demand.

vf corp dropping 9 points at their worst moments. i'm not saying none of these companies can be hurt to the same degree like fossil, which was crushed by europe, as they all have some degree of european exposure. what i am saying is if you really did fear that something was wrong, you could have at least waited for the bounce as every one of these stocks bounced back gigantically intra day as they've done over and over again in 2012. or if you really like one of them or were just waiting for a price break, heaven forbid you could actually buy some. at my charitable trust you can follow along. ralph lauren was down 12 points, enough is enough! closed the day down 5. same thing with the collateral damage from this rackspace. f5 and equinix they just reported stellar numbers, just a few weeks ago. they took gigantic hits before bouncing back like they were on a trampoline or something. there was a much better time to sell, people, than the opening. or how about the opportunities that are hidden in plain sight, a la the purloined letter

why are ralph lauren, vf corp. saying the opposite, that they are shipping more goods than ever? that's a sure sign that the zero sum story isn't true. could there be a trade up or a frad back as shoppers leave the dollar trees and dollar generals to go to walmart and target? what a great thesis it would be if it were true. you know, like really true because the dollar stores are doing well. they haven't lost market share. people haven't traded up yet for walmart. given what we saw from target it's not possible. the numbers are too good. what's going on? something we haven't seen in a while. after a prolonged slump in housing we are noticing general improvement. that's driving a ton of what happened here. household formation means more kids being born after an amazing decline in the birthrate. don't forget stock prices are going higher. combination of more household formation, higher housing and the improvement in the stock portfolios creating a wealth effect. the numbers are too broad, too compelling to think otherwise. there is more shopping for the simple reason things are bet

target, walmart, gap, sen sensual action, pbh, vf corp. that is not hope. those moves are based on phenomenal sales, amazing earnings. only jcpenney's move is based on hope as the numbers there are hideous but people want to believe and they chatter about it endlessly. it doesn't matter people, really. or take housing. all the housing related stocks have been on the move. we are witnessing empirical data, home prices rise in almost every city. when you see that, you put more money into your home, not less. that sends you to the stores. sherwin-williams, the pant company, whirlpool, owens cornings insulation and roofing, stanley black and decker, the homemaker, they are all based on cold, hard numbers. that's what we're after. those gains also impact the domestic banks that are keying on lending and lending seems to be coming back, at least if you listen to the largest mortgage company in the country by far, wells fargo. finally there's tech. many pundits think tech dead, is finished, say because of what happened to intel. everyone was hiding in there pause

how about vf corp., the maker of northface, wrangler after a spectacular quarter. they have made a push under the ceo which many companies have been punished for. not vf. why? wiseman is trolling for acquisitions of smaller companies he can then vf-ize to turn into leaner, meaner operations to allow him to grow regardless of europe. last year he got timberland and we are seeing the payoff as the international business grew 16% with timberland contributing to the growth. he acknowledged weakness in europe but is using it to his advantage to expand with new brands. if only the european business of every other company was as weak as vf's. yes, we saw it with walgreen today. i prefer cvs which my charitable trust is buying. you can say, listen, this is over reaction. walgreen was getting busy dying until this morning because of a tussle with express scripps that cost hundreds of thousands of customers that moved to cvs. the ceo of walgreens knew no matter what he did -- acquisitions, raising dividend he couldn't please shareholders until he resolved the thing with expr
